How to Change the Layer Order of Elements

Precise control over layout and element positioning is key when building polished Power BI reports. In Nebula, you can manually adjust the layer order of elements—bringing shapes forward or pushing them back—to create cleaner, more intentional designs.

This article walks you through how Nebula handles layer behaviour by default, and how to take control of it when your layout needs fine-tuning.

Understanding Layer Order in Nebula

By default, elements are stacked based on the order they’re added:

  • The first element added sits at the back.
  • The most recently added element is placed on top.

When you select any element, it’s temporarily brought to the front for easier editing—but once you click away, it returns to its original layer.

Step-by-Step: Reorder Elements

To change the stacking order manually:

  1. Right-click on the element you want to reorder.
  2. Select Layer Ordering from the context menu.
  3. Choose one of the following options:
    • Bring it forward – Moves the element one layer up
    • Bring it to front – Moves the element above all others.
    • Send it backwards – Moves the element one layer down.
    • Send it to back – Sends the element to the bottom layer.

Control Your Layout with Confidence

By mastering layer order, you gain full control over how elements interact visually—whether it’s aligning shapes, layering highlights, or creating structured page layouts. These small adjustments can make a big difference in your report’s polish and usability.
